The Value Of Values

The Value of Values

Have you ever set a goal and no matter what you did you either could not get traction or you kept making other things a priority?   Yes?  And did you ever work out why this was?

So often when I mentor people I discover that this has happened to them and when I ask a few questions and they complete a few exercises, it becomes apparent that the goal was NOT in alignment with their values list and they subconsciously sabotaged themselves.

Example: A young sole parent desperately wanted to lose weight and get fit and made a New Year’s goal to join a gym and attend the classes.   However in reality, her budget did not allow for this extra expense and as her ‘value’ of taking care of her children was more important to her than her 'value' of personal health and fitness.  Therefore, as much as she talked about getting around to it, her Gym goal never got a start.

Taking time to explore what is important to us is a critical component of our life journey.

 I love to use my Olly the Octopus Brainstorming tool (Download black and white version here ) to help my clients clarify their values.

Ask yourself questions such as: What is important to me? What do I feel strongly about?  Sometimes it is enlightening to ask: What will I NOT stand for? Then flip that into the value it represents. Eg I will not stand for rudeness and foul language can be translated into a Value of Respect.

Next step is to list them in priority. Eg if you value quality time with your family to play and connect deeply more than you do financial freedom, you will probably turn down some of the extra overtime shifts to allow the family interaction.

Please remember this. We each need to place high importance on our OWN wellbeing and let go of feelings of guilt by putting everyone else first. We are of more use/service/value to others when WE are operating at our best!

Once you are clear on your values and the priority they take in your life, you will actually save time and angst as you will make important decisions very quickly and avoid the disappointment of perceived ‘failure’ of actions and goals that perhaps would have been better avoided.

Essential oils are powerful partners in the process of determining your Values.
Here are my suggestions and how they can help you with this foundational step towards success.

doTERRA Bergamot Essential Oil – helps breathe life into your sense of ‘self’; invites you to accept and feel confident in your worth;
doTERRA Clove Essential Oil – supports us in setting our boundaries and gives our Truth a voice to say No to those things that are not in alignment with our values;
doTERRA Cypress Essential Oil – invites us to let go of fear and efforts to ‘force things’ - clarify your values then ‘let go of control’ and trust in the flow of life.

These three make a delightful aromatic blend for the diffuser or a ‘purefume’ when blended with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil. I use one drop of Clove to 2 drops of Cypress and 2 drops of Bergamot.
